What’s wrong with a fixed pitch prop?

We fly our RC models with a fixed pitch prop (some are ground adjustable).  The good news:  they are simple, less expensive, and easy to make.  The bad news: they totally compromise performance — takeoff, climb, cruise, speed and economy.  

A fixed pitch prop is like driving a race car with only one gear.  

A Constant Speed prop means no performance compromise! 

With the WPD Constant Speed propeller system, you get the maximum performance for takeoff (lower, flatter pitch) and maximum performance for straight and level flight (higher, coarser pitch).   

When you climb, descend, even pull some G’s in a turn, our Constant Speed Prop system will change the prop pitch to keep the speed of the prop constant, optimized for the best aerodynamic performance at all times.  

Best of all, it’s all done automatically.  You use your throttle stick just like before, and when the prop reaches a preset speed — our system takes over, giving you just what you need -- takeoff, vertical performance, more speed (from the same sized motor) and better economy. 
 
Now you have a Warbird with an infinite amount of “race car gears” — with all the performance of the full scale plane, automatically.

HOW IT WORKS

Our unique Constant Speed, Adjustable Pitch propeller works just like a full sized CS prop.  The speed is set to a constant RPM via your computer radio, and a sensor mounted on the drive picks up the prop RPM and sends it to the prop speed governor.  The governor "does the math" and tells the prop pitch servo to automatically adjust the pitch to keep the RPM in the optimum performance range.  You get maximum performance (fine pitch) for takeoff and vertical maneuvers, and maximum speed (coarse pitch) for strafing runs and high speed passes!!

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD PROP THAT YOU SAW AT TOLEDO LAST YEAR AND USED TO BE ON THIS WEBSITE?

1st, it was way too expensive to import and sell here.  Our goal is to let LOTS of people run our props, and the other design just wouldn't allow that

2nd, the design allowed for a single point failure of the blade retention mechanism. That to us was unacceptable.  Our design will have multiple redundancy to greatly reduce the possibility of the blade ever leaving the hub

3rd, the pitch adjustment mechanism was not user friendly at all!!  It was a very simple design, but in practice, very difficult to assure that you were adjusting each blade to the same degrees of pitch.  As you can imagine, one blade off a few degrees at 3000-4500 rpm is a recipe for disaster!!  I know from personal experience how exciting it is to see one blade running at a pitch difference of 3".  Not good

4th, the actual blade geometry had a "curve" in the blade that concentrated all of the stresses exactly where you didn't want them.  Also, not acceptable 

So, all of this was enough reason to totally design something new, safer, at a lower cost, and much more user friendly.  Oh, and did we mention much more performance?
